With multiple dogs we find it cheaper and easier to make their food ourselves. And it means we know exactly what they are eating. We started doing it about 10 years ago, when one of our dogs had ongoing troublesome tummy and appetite issues and we needed to take control of the situation. Here's how we make our own dog food.
We pick up food for the dogs from local markets and shops: sardines and vegetables come from markets and the meat is from a couple of local butchers.
Our dogs get a marrow bone and a couple of sardines for breakfast, boiled chicken breast for treats, and a main early evening meal.
Here's our recipe for their main meal:
•Meat: add pureed chicken carcass to an organic mince base, usually lamb but we vary it
•Veg: add 30% blended mixed seasonal veg, plenty of leafy greens like kale plus carrots, courgettes, peas
•Supplements: we also and add aloe vera, fish oil, a teaspoon of golden turmeric paste (organic turmeric, water, coconut oil, cracked black pepper)
And serve!
